The map module is now able to search not only for cities and map sheet numbers in dynamic mode, but also for geographical coordinates (latitude, longitude, formatted as "49.453173, 8.447580"). The search function has been adapted accordingly. To a certain extent, the format of the search item is recognized automatically and there is no need to toggle the dropdown field before searching.

The submission module for beetle ID got a new validation routine today: When submitting an inquiry, the inquiry text is parsed for a valid discovery date, a body length and – as the case may be – a valid species name from the user's pre-ID. The results are displayed in a box below the inquiry text. Please always make sure to submit a complete and correct inquiry. This helps our admin team tremendously.

The faunistic database just increased to 69,895 records, the number of contributors to 955. Thanks to all who contributed their faunistic records in this update cycle.

19.05.2016
I just added a new category to the module on highlights from the requests for beetle ID: In the category "Late corrections" you can find those inquiries, where we corrected our initial determination later than one month after the inquiry was submitted. Not exactly a highlight, but still useful...

30.04.2016
The faunistic database just increased to 67,935 records, the number of contributors to 920. Thanks to all who contributed their faunistic records in this update cycle.

23.04.2016
I just further enhanced our new module on highlights from the requests for beetle ID. I have added a thumbnail view and two additional categories, namely "Exotic species" and "Often submitted". The latter supersedes the former standalone module "Most requested species", which I removed as a consequence. I hope you find the new functionality useful!

18.04.2016
At the suggestion of Holger from the kerbtier.de ID team I programmed a new page with the highlights from the requests for beetle ID which I just uploaded this evening. On this page you can find recent highlights from our user's requests for beetle ID (optionally 7 days, 4 weeks, 3 months) in the categories "Best photo", "Most endangered species" and "Rarely submitted species". With this page we want to recognize the efforts and successes of our sedulous contributors, both as a commendation as well as an incentive to all our users. Thanks to Holger for the good idea and to all visitors a pleasant stay on kerbtier.de!

31.03.2016
The faunistic database just increased to 66,574 records, the number of contributors to 896. Thanks to all who contributed their faunistic records in this update cycle.

13.03.2016
If a request for beetle ID contains more than one photo, the user can select the photo to be displayed. Up to now, the selection took place via small buttons underneath the photo container. I have changed this now and added a thumbnail preview, which also triggers the photo selection. It is located in the upper left corner of the photo container and is dimmed. At the same time, I have moved the stage container to the upper right corner of the photo container and dimmed it as well. If you move the mouse into the photo container, both elements are shown with 100% opacity and can be used as normal. I hope the new UI feature proves useful and does not clutter the UI.

05.03.2016
As many users of the inquiry module may know, our admin team has flagged the development stages (egg, larva, pupa, imago) shown on the submitted photos, thus making them searchable in the search module. However, up to now only one stage could be flagged, even in cases where several were shown in the photos. Therefore I have revised the entire complex around the development stages. From now on, our admins can flag all development stages shown in a set of photos submitted with an inquiry (e.g. egg AND imago). I also added "habitat" as additional criterion. In all inquiry modules the flagged stages are shown in full text mode as a small graphic container, e.g.  , where the available stages are marked in green.

Among the almost 40,000 inquiries submitted so far, there are many showing several stages. Which means of course, that we have to work through them and flag them correctly. In this respect I would like to ask for the help of our users: If you find any inquiries with wrong or incomplete flagging of the development stages, please let us know. Of course not by email, but with the dedicated functionality I just implemented: If you click on the stage container, a popup window opens, where you can enter and submit your correction. The correction proposals will be reviewed regularly and applied once approved by the admin team.

Addendum: As the new functionality is still in its infancy, I just found and removed a few minor bugs. Everything should be working fine now. At the same time a revised the GUI of the stage correction popup window and the like functionality.

New Year 2016

22.12.2015
I just updated all modules connected to the inquiry database: Up to now, additional species data (the small symbols for map module, phenogram, red list, etc.) were only available for species present in the main database of kerbtier.de (that means species which I have found and photographed myself). Starting today, these data are available for all inquired species, which are surely determined or with only slight uncertainty (cf.) with the proviso that the species is present in Germany, and is part of the Red List of endangered species of Germany. I hope you find the new functionality useful!

29.11.2015
The faunistic database just increased to 62,612 records, the number of contributors to 864. Thanks to all who contributed their faunistic records in this update cycle.

02.11.2015
With the recently made programming experiences (jQuery) I have further improved the photo comparison module, the map module and the phenogram module. I hope you'll find the changes useful. Please don't forget to refresh in your browser as there are multiple changes in the javascripts and in the stylesheets.

31.10.2015
The module for the comparison of photos just got a new user interface today. Along with new the multi-criteria query capability (which is meanwhile a standard on kerbtier.de), the selection and transfer of the species into the picture slots for comparison is now handled with drag & drop. Furthermore, the design has been cleaned up a bit. Don't forget to refresh when you access the new version for the first time. I hope you enjoy the new version!

20.10.2015
The faunistic database just increased to 61,277 records, the number of contributors to 853. Thanks to all who contributed their faunistic records in this update cycle.

18.10.2015
I just made a revamp of all map functionality on kerbtier.de. In this context I have combined two modules, namely the standalone module for gathering map sheet numbers and the module for searching species by map sheet numbers with the primary map module. The faunistic database can now be searched using multiple criteria, the matches can be displayed as list, thumbnail overview (small and large) and as map, as before as static GIF map or (new) as dynamic map with the Google Maps UI. In this mode you can also gather map sheet numbers (in addition to the inline map modules which are available wherever map sheet data are needed). There were numerous changes in the javascripts. Please press in any case refresh in your browser when accessing kerbtier.de, especially if something seems not to work in the first attempt.

02.10.2015
I just developed the inquiry module further: Besides some design improvements I also applied some changes to the user guidance of the module to make its use even more intuitive.

26.09.2015
The faunistic database just increased to 60,653 records, the number of contributors to 846. Thanks to all who contributed their faunistic records in this update cycle.

31.08.2015
The faunistic database just increased to 59,449 records, the number of contributors to 832. Thanks to all who contributed their faunistic records in this update cycle.

29.08.2015
I just added a new functionality to the inquiry module: The newly added button allows to add a correct species name from a species list to your inquiry. If you already have an idea of the species name of the beetle you submit or you just want to submit a record, please don't hesitate to enter your own determination in the inquiry, preferably by using the button.

26.08.2015
The recent experiences with clustering ID requests in the module for checking the request status convinced me to introduce this feature also in the large search module for inquiries. Like before, it can display matching inquiries as full text or as thumbnail view. Unlike before you can now choose between large thumbnails with additional info and a very compact view with small thumbnails. In both thumbnail modes matching inquiries can now be clustered according to a user-selected order criterion. With this new feature the search module becomes quite powerful. I wish all kerbtier.de users lots of fun with the new function!

23.08.2015
I've just come up with a further improvement to the new module for checking the request status. If several users use the same nickname, one user can be now selected for display, all others will be hidden. The selection is saved as cookie. By the way: At the request of our forum user Christoph I just added a thumbnail view mode.

22.08.2015
I've just added a new module, which allows checking the status of your own inquiries or of other users and to cluster them according to various criteria. The module should help primarily the find your own requests for beetle ID quickly, whether they are still queuing for ID or are already answered and released. You may notice however when playing around with the clustering function, that simple statistics can be performed on the inquiries as well. I hope the new module will prove it useful.

01.08.2015
I've just uploaded the gallery update with 42 new species from 13 families. The number of species available on kerbtier.de increases to 2,505. At the same time the database of the map module increases to 58,758 records, the number of contributors to 800. I wish all visitors a pleasant stay on kerbtier.de!

05.07.2015
Starting today, all users of our ID forum can send private messages to our ID team members. Just go to the ID viewpage, open the team overview and click on the little letter icon below the respective admin photo.

27.02.2015
At the request of our forum user BUG I just implemented a new data field in the inquiry module and in the dependent view and search modules: The country of the discovery is now a mandatory entry field, allowing a database search for discoveries in (our outside) of specific countries. For all inquiries submitted up to now, I manually added this data field to enable full functionality. Please press refresh in your browser when visiting the inquiry search module for the first time to reload the new javascript file.

22.02.2015
And another update on the topic page introducing nature and species protection in Germany: Maik Hausotte contributed a new chapter (6 - Beetles in the approval/planning practice). Thanks, Maik!

15.02.2015
The topic page introducing the Federal Nature Conservation Act, the Federal Regulation for the Protection of Species and the FFH-Directive has been updated in chapters 3 (BNatSchG) and 4 (BArtSchV) according to the most recent changes in legislation. Thanks to Maik Hausotte!

04.02.2015
Dear kerbtier.de users, I just fixed an error that occurred today all of a sudden in the submission module. The Google Maps API became prematurely visible and overlayed the controls of the submission module, thus preventing the upload of photos and the entering of data. I've fixed the error now and everything should be back to normal. If necessary, please press refresh in your browser. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Hello kerbtier.de users, I made the next development step in the page layout of kerbtier.de: The top banner is now collapsible and the main menu remains permanently visible at the top of the page. Similar behaviour like e.g. the homepage of Twitter. Please press refresh in your browser when visiting for the first time to reload the new CSS stylesheets and javascript files.

22.11.2014
At the request of my co-admin Michael I added a progress bar to the submission module for the upload of photos via drag & drop (it's not shown though when uploading via the fileselector as javascript does not control cgi uploads). And our user BUG proposed to allow the users to delete/replace uploaded photos while submitting requests, which I implemented right away. Furthermore, you can now jump back to previous editing steps (photo upload and data entry) by clicking the respective green progress arrows to apply any changes before finally submitting. Thanks to both for the good ideas! Keep it up!

21.11.2014
Over the past days I wrote a new version of the submission module for requests for beetle ID. It allows the upload of up to three photos in one single step, either via the classic file selector dialogue or directly via drag & drop in the upload window. I used the XHR2 specification to implement this new functionality, so a fairly recent browser version (IE10+, FF31+, Chrome31+, Opera25+, iOS Safari7.1+) is required and javascript must be enabled. I hope the new functionality makes the posting of requests more convenient and efficient!

09.11.2014
The faunistic database just increased to 46,798 records, the number of contributors to 612. Thanks to all who contributed their faunistic records in this update cycle.

30.09.2014
Yesterday and today I successively added two new features on kerbtier.de: Starting today, the phenograms do not only show my own discovery periods, but also those of the users, who submitted their discoveries to our inquiry module. Only reliably determined inquiries are considered, which have been made in Germany and released by the users for use in the distribution maps, and which - of course - do contain a valid date of discovery. In this way, approx. 10,000 additional records have become available in the phenograms. In this context, I would like to request all users, who submit their inquiries to us, to provide an exact date of discovery in the form DD.MM.YYYY so we can automate the extraction of discovery dates. To support that, I wrote a little calendar module in javascript and added it to the inquiry module.

Hello kerbtier.de users, I just hacked a bit on a new piece of code this morning and out comes the powerful new Universal search. Its use is simplicity itself. You can search in all categories of kerbtier.de at the same time by species or family name, e.g. in the family overviews, predefined photo comparisons, requests for beetle ID, featured species of the week, distribution maps and more. The matches will be displayed with number of matches per category and a link will lead you directly to the result overview in the respective category. I hope you enjoy the new functionality and use it a lot.

Dear users of the kerbtier.de beetle ID module! Over the last few weeks I received several requests, whether we could allow the user the edit her/his request for beetle ID after initial submission., e.g. add further photos or provide additional relevant information for ID. Exactly that is possible from now on! The kerbtier.de ID team can send callbacks with respect to submitted requests and can release them for further editing/processing by the user. The user will receive an email including a link to the editing page for her/his inquiry, where the inquiry can be edited once within 48 hours - to the extent permitted by the ID team. I'm very curious how the new functionality will perform in practice. In any case I recommend a look into the revised manual (see the new chapter 4).

New Year 2014

10.12.2013
Today I added a new module to the menu "Tools": On the new page Etymology the user can search for the meaning of the scientific species names of the beetles of the German fauna. Often they are derived from Latin or ancient Greek and describe the beetle and its properties. The new functionality can also be used from all species overviews on kerbtier.de: Just click the newly added symbol . The new functionality is based on the book "Erklärung der wissenschaftlichen Käfernamen aus Reitters Fauna Germanica" by Sigmund Schenkling, published in 1917 at K.G. Lutz in Stuttgart. I have added some editorial amendments and translated the entire work into English. I hope all visitors will find the new functionality useful!

The faunistic database just increased to 37,507 records, the number of contributors to 322. Thanks to all contributors!

13.07.2013
I've just uploaded the gallery update with 28 new species from 12 families. The number of species available on kerbtier.de increases to 2,432. At the same time the database of the map module increases to 36,660 records, the number of contributors to 297. I wish all visitors a pleasant stay on kerbtier.de!

07.06.2013
Today I uploaded a new search module to complement the recently updated module for userdefined photo comparisons. This module allows to search the photo comparisons compiled and published by kerbtier.de users.

01.06.2013
The module for the comparison of photos has been around on kerbtier.de for quite a few years now. Today I uploaded the new version 4. It allows the user to save and publish comparisons he produced with the module (e.g. of three similar Anthaxia species). Just compile your desired comparison, press the new button "save and publish" and use the resulting link to share your comparison with other users, e.g. in an internet forum. The new functionality is protected by the captcha already known from the contact form of kerbtier.de. The saved comparisons will remain permanently available, there will be no dead links in the future. From time to time I will review the comparisons; especially well made comparisons will become searchable on kerbtier.de - but for that I need to do some more programming. The idea by the way is from Klaas Reißmann. Thanks, Klaas, that was a good one!

29.05.2013
Today I revised the main menu bar on kerbtier.de in a specific detail: The headlines of the menu (Families, Topics, Search, Identify etc.) do not bear hyperlinks anymore. On the one hand it was anyway not really logical, why the title would be linked with one of the subentry pages. On the other hand, it was bothersome for smartphone and tablet users, because when touching the menu title the system rather than opening the menu tree instead jumped to the linked page. In case the menu looks somewhat crumpled upon the first visit after this change please just click refresh in your browser to load the updated CSS stylesheet.

15.06.2012
Dear kerbtier.de users! Our new module for the submission of beetle photos for ID has been online for almost seven weeks and the whole project has evolved very nicely: We received more than 500 ID requests and our kerbtier.de ID team has done its utmost to answer all your inquiries. With the growing number of inquiries, it is getting increasingly difficult to find older requests. Therefore I've implemented a search module, which I put online today. It allows you to search our inquiry database by a vast number of search criteria, like species and family name, date and text of the requests and answers, any many more. Requests matching your search criteria will be displayed in the well-known kerbtier.de manner as thumbnail overview. Clicking a thumbnail opens the respective complete inquiry. I hope the new module helps to find submitted requests and facilitates general search in our inquiry database.

10.06.2012
Observation of Prionychus melanarius in the forest Bienwald (Palatinate) as well as Bembidion argenteolum and Cylindera arenaria in the district of Rastatt (North Baden).

Furthermore, today I've added a rating function to the view module for answered ID requests, both for the photo(s) and the admin comments.

30.05.2012
I've just uploaded improved versions of the modules for the submission of beetle photos for ID. From now on, up to three photos of one beetle (e.g. from different angels or with different magnification) can be uploaded per request. This makes the necessity to submit several inquiries for one animal obsolete. Please note: Do only submit 1 animal (= 1 species) per request and do not put photos of different species in one request. In the latter case, our admins will erase all pictures except for one species and answer/determine only this one.

28.04.2012
Recently the number of requests for photo identification of beetles found by kerbtier.de users has increased quite a bit. Most of them arrive by email. Therefore I have decided to bring two new modules online: One to allow the users to submit photos for identification. The photos must be owned by the requester, they should be high-res, cropped, around 1000 x 800 pixels (max. 1 MB file size), and they should be accompanied by some information about date, place and circumstances of discovery. All submitted inquiries are checked by the kerbtier.de ID team, the species determined if possible, and the answered inquiries released for publication on kerbtier.de.

The module for the submission of photos works with SSL, so the request is sent encrypted to kerbtier.de. Please add your name and email address for our callback (if necessary). Both your name and email will not be published on kerbtier.de. I hope that the new modules find many users and contribute to spread some beetle knowledge. And I cordially thank Thomas Forcke and Klaas Reißmann, who volunteered for the kerbtier.de ID team.

16.04.2012
The database of the map module just increased to 27,480 records. Thanks to Michael Stern, Gernot Medger, Gerhard Schwab, Marek Swadzba, Marcel Altenburger, Dirk Dannenberg, Jürgen Gmach, Norbert Kilian, Eva Knon, Monika Strehl and Marc Török.

22.08.2011
I've just uploaded a new enhancement to all thumbnail overviews on kerbtier.de: From now on, below every species thumbnail on kerbtier.de a little traffic light is displayed, indicating the ease of determination by photo: very easy (), difficult () or very difficult to impossible (). Species marked with a green traffic light should be easily determined also by laypersons with some basic knowledge. Species marked with yellow are more difficult, but can be usually determined by experts from good high-res photos. Species marked with a red traffic light are very difficult to determine by photo or cannot be determined by photo at all. The new function is mainly aimed at newcomers and shall indicate the restraints of photo determination.

05.03.2011
All thumbnail overviews on kerbtier.de now allow the user to select the preferred gender of the beetles displayed, either female (♀) or male (♂). Around 220 of the 2,300 species available on kerbtier.de are covered with photos of the male, female or both. In those cases, where the preferred gender is not available, an existing photo is displayed instead. The gender is displayed as symbol right of the species name. If no symbol is shown, the gender of the beetle has not been determined. The high-res photos are not yet switched to gender-specific, but will follow mid-term.

27.02.2011
Today I added a sort of "shopping basket" to kerbtier.de. In the family overviews as well as in the modules Search by name and Search by appearance there is a new icon below the species name: and respectively. By clicking the symbol , the selected species is added to a user-defined thumbnail comparison (similar to the shopping basket in an online shop). By clicking the symbol the species is deleted from the comparison. The beetle species compiled to the comparison can be either viewed with the new module Thumbnail comparison or can be used as pre-selection in the module Compare photos for the comparison of high-res pictures. The selected species remain stored as cookie on the local hard disk for maximum 12 hours (cookies must be enabled in the browser). I hope, the new function is not too complicated to use and proves useful over time.

13.02.2011
The database of the map module makes another huge leap forward and increases to 22,357 records. Special thanks to Michael Stern, furthermore to Heidi Röder, Justus Vogt, Manfred Niehuis, Reinhold Beikircher and Carlo Graf Bülow.

29.01.2011
The map module just got two new features: Besides the list of contributors, I've added an overview of the available records per map sheet as kmz file for Google Earth, as well as an Excel list of all recorded species. The number of beetle records can be displayed in Google Earth as a green bar on the respective map sheet. Its height correlates with the number of species recorded in that particular map sheet, hence gives an overview of the current coverage of the German beetle fauna.

15.01.2011
The database of the map module just increased to 19,703 records. Thanks to Heidi Röder, Mario Finkel and Reinhold Beikircher. Please also note that the menu entry "Download" has been moved to the section "Tools". Finally I added a new book review.

09.01.2011
I've just uploaded the further improved version 3 of the module for photo comparison. Now with an optional convenient thumbnail preview. The manual has been revised accordingly. Have fun with it!

02.01.2011
I just uploaded a few minor detail enhancements on kerbtier.de: The menu entry "Families" now opens a menu with superfamilies and families, which can be directly clicked. By choosing a superfamily, only the families comprised in this superfamily will be displayed in the family overview (here e.g. Cucujoidea). The CSS menu bar has been completely revised. I've tested it with IE8 and Firefox 3.6. Should you experience any problems, please kindly provide your feedback to kerbtier.de. Furthermore, I added a new functionality to the overviews of notable beetle records and featured species: By choosing "new" as a filter, only the ten most recent entries will be displayed. Finally, with the changes on the internal data structure, in passing I added five new species from Q4/2010 as a tiny update in the photo gallery.

01.01.2011
I wish all visitors of kerbtier.de a happy and successful New Year 2011 and lots of fun with the beetle hobby!

13.08.2010
With today's update I enhanced the map functionality on kerbtier.de: First of all, from now on there is a "standalone" version of the map module in the menu "Fauna". It allows searching for species by name and displaying their distribution in a map of Germany, even if the species is not yet available with a photo on kerbtier.de. Reliable data of coleopterists and beetle enthusiasts with a faunistic background are highly welcome! Klaas Reißmann made a first contribution to this project with nearly 4,000 records (thanks!). Long-term, I'd like to develop this project into a good overview of the German beetle fauna.

The map module is based on the map sheets of the German ordnance map TK25. Map sheet numbers of the TK25 are often mentioned in faunistic publications in Germany. Therefore, I've implemented an additional small map tool TK25, which can be used to find out the TK25 map sheet number for a given location and vice versa. The module is based on the Google Maps API V3. I've done the implementation in javascript (must be enabled in the browser to use the module).

Please enjoy the new functions! I hope that more colleagues will like this project and contribute their faunistic data to improve it further.

24.07.2010
I've just completed and uploaded a new map module on kerbtier.de. The new module allows displaying my beetle records in a map of Germany, clustered by the most recent year of discovery.
To display the map, simply click the little green map icon in the species overview (on the right of the species name). The locations have been normalized according to the map sheets of TK 25 (ordnance map). Enjoy the new function!

22.02.2010
Today a user suggested an improvement in the module Search by appearance. So from now on, search results cannot only be sorted alphabetically and systematically, but also by body length. The manual has been revised accordingly.

18.02.2010
On March 1st, 2010 the new version of the Federal Nature Conservation Act will come into force. Therefore the topic page introducing the Federal Nature Conservation Act, the Federal Regulation for the Protection of Species and the FFH-Directive has been updated. Thanks to Maik Hausotte for his support.

15.02.2010
At the end of the winter season I've just uploaded another update on kerbtier.de: A new topic page on the phylogeny of the beetles from their origin in the Permian 300 million years ago until today. I also try to shed some light on the continental drift and changes in climate conditions during the history of the earth. To make this site would have been impossible without the support with photos and maps by a number of scientists from paleontology and geology. Their support is gratefully acknowledged. I also thank Irina Würtele and Klaas Reißmann for their review of the draft and helpful comments and suggestions.

24.01.2010
I've just uploaded six new book reviews on the literature page. Thanks to Dr. Andreas Müller who made this contribution to kerbtier.de. I also thank all the publishers, who granted permission to use the pictures of their respective book covers and 2-page previews.

16.01.2010
And another new topic page on the jewel beetle Agrilus biguttatus. Special thanks to Klaas Reißmann for the text and some photos of the larva and the woodpecker marks. I also want to thank Petr Zábranský for the photograph of Agrilus guerini.

09.01.2010
In order to keep the former featured species, I've created a new page with a complete overview of all species previously presented. The link to the new page can be found in the main menu bar under the entry "Fauna".

08.01.2010
Klaas Reißmann contributed a new topic page on the Click beetle Lacon querceus, which I've just uploaded. Thanks, Klaas! I also want to thank Josef Mertlik (www.elateridae.com) for the kind permission to use his nice photographs of mounted specimen of three Lacon species and of Danosoma fasciata for this page.

01.01.2010
I wish all visitors of kerbtier.de a happy and successful New Year 2010! And of course, lots of beetles...

So as a start into the New Year, I've just uploaded a new page with tips and hints on books and literature about beetles and coleopterology. Many thanks go to Klaas Reißmann, who did not only have the initial idea for the page, but also invested a tremendous amount of time and effort to realize it. Besides, I made a few minor changes to the main menu bar: The new literature page can be found under "Tools", together with the glossary and my selection of beetle links. Furthermore, I replaced "Home" by a tiny house symbol, thus creating free space in the menu bar for new stuff ;-). I wish all of you a pleasant stay on kerbtier.de!

28.12.2009
New color patterns added on the page variability of elytral color patterns in Coccinellidae. Thanks to Jörg Pageler! Photos of further variants are welcome! Simply send an email to kerbtier.de with the photo(s) attached.

27.12.2009
After 5 hours of maintenance, kerbtier.de is online again. At the very first sight, there are not too many changes. However, I've improved the CSS stylesheets to work with variable font size and to display the main menu bar in a proper way. In case of any errors, dead links, etc. I'll be happy to receive your feedback.

14.12.2009
I've just uploaded a new search module, which is - well let's call it ... experimental. You can find it in the menu "Search" under the entry "Search by appearance". The basic idea was that it can be quite tricky to find a species, if the user has no clue in which family to start the search. It would be much better to say: "Well, the beetle was of oval shape, black pronotum, red elytra, black legs and was approx. 5 mm long" and then get pictures displayed which match this description. That's exactly what this module does. To use the module is a little more complicated than the other functions of kerbtier.de. Therefore I wrote a small manual that can be downloaded as pdf file. Please take a look at it before using the module for the first time. First experiences show that the module is not very well suited for unicolored species, but much better for colorful species - those which the interested nature observes most like will find.

I hope that this new function enables the visitors of kerbtier.de to identify their beetle more quickly and easily than before. If you have any questions, comments or experience any problems or errors, please don't hesitate to contact me via the contact form or via email. I would particularly like to thank Ingrid Altmann and especially Klaas Reißmann, who volunteered as beta testers during the development phase.

12.12.2009
kerbtier.de just got a new starting page, containing some useful functions sorted in categories. On the left I've added the page structure as tree. On the right there is now direct access to the latest news, records etc. Furthermore, there will be a featured species every week on the starting page with some background information. Let's start with tiger beetle Cicindela hybrida. In case of any errors, dead links, etc. I'll be happy to receive your feedback.

20.09.2009
New color patterns of Harmonia axyridis added on the page variability of elytral color patterns in Coccinellidae. Thanks to Arp Kruithof, Bernard Fransen and Gerrian Tacoma. Photos of further variants are welcome! Simply send an email to kerbtier.de with the photo(s) attached.

13.09.2009
I've just uploaded six new beetle records from August and September 2009. Additionally, I've added a new page with selected internet links to beetle sites, which I would like to expand further in the future. It can be accessed by clicking "Links" in the top navigation bar.

05.09.2009
Today I've uploaded a new topic page introducing the Federal Nature Conservation Act, the Federal Regulation for the Protection of Species and the FFH-Directive. The page is especially aimed at hobby coleopterists, knowing little or nothing about the relevant legislation. Special thanks go to Maik Hausotte, who initially had the idea for the page and contributed major parts of the German text.

18.08.2009
I've just uploaded a small summer update with 40 new species from several families. The number of species available on kerbtier.de increases to 2,180. I wish all visitors of kerbtier.de a pleasant stay on my site!

02.07.2009
I've just uploaded 8 new records, more will be published within a short time.

26.06.2009
At the end of the beetle season I've finally compiled a major update on kerbtier.de. Besides adding 150 new species from many different families, I've also replaced many old photos with new ones in higher resolution. The total number of species available on kerbtier.de has now grown to 2,140. I wish all visitors of kerbtier.de a pleasant stay on my site!

23.02.2009
I've just uploaded a glossary of entomological terms. Thanks to Klaas Reißmann, who compiled major parts of the glossary.

14.02.2009
After two weeks of hard work I've just uploaded some updates and new features. kerbtier.de has become completely bilingual English/German (support of English native speakers to further improve the English pages would be highly appreciated!). Above the banner I've added a top navigation bar with functions to toggle the language, open the imprint and so on. Furthermore, I've reworked the main menu, which is now implemented as a drop-down menu in CSS (and some Javascript to for some older browsers).

And there are some new features: I've added a contact form (try the code entry ;-)), a sitemap, and a new section called "Records", where I will publish my beetle discoveries in the near future. With so many changes, I hope that not too many errors sneaked in. In any case, I'll be happy to receive your feedback, via the contact form or directly to my email address (see imprint).

27.01.2009
As promised I've finished my work on the higher-resolution photos. Today I uploaded them on my site, together with some additional novelties:

As can be easily seen, kerbtier.de got a little facelift and also a somewhat improved navigation. The thumbnails in the species overviews can now be clicked to display a 970 x 600 pixel photo of the respective species (javascript must be enabled). You can also now directly use the sorting function by clicking the radio buttons, instead of clicking the former "sort" button. Additionally, the user can save her/his preferred sorting mode (cookies must be allowed). And finally, I've implemented something completely new: With the "Compare" function you can directly put up two photos (440 x 712) of user-defined species next to each other. This should facilitate the identification of morphological differences between the selected species.

I wish all of you a pleasant stay on my website. Any feedback can be sent to my email address, which can be found in the imprint.

04.01.2009
And again another tiny novelty: If you hover the mouse pointer over a thumbnail in the species overview, the body length (in mm) of the species is displayed as tooltip.

03.01.2009
I've just uploaded new sorting functions. The families on the main page can now be sorted in systematic or alphabetical order or by number of recorded species (descending). The species overviews within the respective families can now be sorted systematically or alphabetically. Default is "systematic". I hope that these new functions enable the user to locate the desired species faster and easier.

01.01.2009
I wish all visitors of kerbtier.de a happy and successful New Year 2009!

Some in-house news:
When I switched my site's architecture to SQL, I removed the species fact sheets, as probably some users might have noticed. Unfortunately, I've found out pretty quickly that the effort to put the fact sheets together by far exceeds my possibilities. Even if I prepared one fact sheet per day, it would take about 5 years to cover all 2,000 species on this site. Therefore I've decided to cancel this project.

In exchange, I'll increase kerbtier.de's "resolution". I'm currently preparing a higher-resolution photo (approx. 900 x 600) for each species, which can be displayed by clicking the thumbnail. It's going to take some time to prepare them all, but I hope to finish this job before February.

06.12.2008
Today I've uploaded a minor update with 18 new species from the 2nd half of 2008. Additionally, I replaced several older photos with newer ones with better quality.

03.08.2008
Amazing, already done! I've just finished the new search function. Just give it a try! Best regards, Christoph :)

02.08.2008
I've just uploaded the promised major update of kerbtier.de. Besides more than 150 new species from many different families, I also worked on the architecture of kerbtier.de. The new "brain" is now a SQL database, all queries are done in Perl. The inclusion into the pages is done with SSI. From now on, the species labels are no longer graphics, but text and can be searched. The SQL database also allows a targeted search and compilation of species, but please be patient for some while, I'm working on it ;-). I wish all visitors of kerbtier.de a pleasant stay on my site!

02.07.2008
Another tiny update in the section variability of elytral color patterns in Coccinellidae with photos of Ingrid Altmann and Kirsten Eta (thanks!). A major update of the main gallery is under planning, but has to wait, until the "open season" is finished.

02.04.2008
Over the last few days I've added further photos in the section variability of elytral color patterns in Coccinellidae. Thanks to Jürgen Peters, Maik Hausotte, Frank Dickert und Eugen Dietz! For all other visitors: Take part in the project!

15.03.2008
Ingrid Altmann provided additional photos for the section variability of elytral color patterns in Coccinellidae. Thanks a lot, Ingrid! For all other visitors: Take part in the project!

13.03.2008
Arp Kruithof has contributed lots of new photos for the section variability of elytral color patterns in Coccinellidae, which I've just finished uploading. Especially the section on Harmonia axyridis is meanwhile pretty nice. Thanks, Arp!

07.03.2008
Starting today, I've kicked off a new topic: Variability of elytral color patterns in Coccinellidae. On this page I've started to collect photos of various coccinellid species with differing elytral color patterns. I hope that this collection also of less common variants supports the user her/his own determination efforts. In this regard, I'd like to call for your contribution: If you've made good photos (dorsal view) of coccinellids with interesting elytral color patterns not yet found on this page, please don't hesitate to submit them via email. I'll put them on the page, of course you will be cited as the author of the respective photo(s).

19.12.2007
5 new fact sheets added to the section ground beetles (Carabidae) (genus Omophron and Elaphrus).

12.12.2007
10 new fact sheets added to the section ground beetles (Carabidae) (genus Carabus, Cychrus, Leistus, Nebria, Notiophilus).

03.12.2007
New fact sheets added to the section ground beetles (Carabidae).

21.11.2007
Midterm, I'd like to present a fact sheet for each (well, almost each) species on this page, containing the most important information, e.g. relevant criteria for determination, distribution, habitat and larger photos as well. I've just uploaded five fact sheets for evaluation purposes (for Cicindela hybrida, Cicindela campestris, Calosoma inquisitor and for the Carabus species C. coriaceus and C. irregularis). Just click the species thumbnail in the overview of Carabidae (the thumbnail has a small orange marker in the lower left corner, if a fact sheet is available for the species). Please send any feedback to my email address.

01.11.2007
From today, there is a new and comprehensive page on the stag beetle Lucanus cervus, one of our well-known and also largest species in Germany. Klaas Reißmann has contributed the text (thanks, Klaas!). In the section "life cycle" javascript is used and should be enabled.

26.10.2007
Today I've made some minor improvements in the navigation and I've kicked off a new section "topics". In this section, I'd like to impart some beetle knowledge especially to the freshmen in our science. I start with the external morphology of the beetles. In order to use the animated schemata, javascript must be enabled.

19.10.2007
At last! After hesitating for quite some while, I pulled myself together and compiled some of my beetle photos to a website. Primary target is to provide a simple and quick overview of the German beetle fauna, for freshmen as a support in their own determination efforts, for the experienced coleopterists to watch and relax. I would especially like to thank two friends: Klaas Reißmann, who guided me several years ago on my first steps in the beetle science. And Ingrid Altmann, she finally convinced me to put my work online.
