The pill beetles (Byrrhidae) are a small family of small to medium-sized beetles, which feed on algae and moss, occasionally on liverworts, lichens, and grass roots. Worldwide some 300 species have been described, thereof 25 from Germany. They can be found on sandy shorelines, beneath logs and stones, among grass roots, and mossy habitats in general
