View answered requests for beetle ID
|
On this page you can find photos submitted by users from the start in 2012 till the shutdown in 2023. If possible, the species are identified by the kerbtier.de ID team. Sometimes determination by photo only is impossible, in this case a hint on family and genus and potential species will be given.

Request: Badister unipustulatus ? found 16-04-2014 08:24 in Belgium (ref 83448236)
Species, family:
Badister lacertosus
Carabidae
Comment: Hi Gert, a photo taken from the under side of the beetle would make it absolutely easy for you to eliminate B. unipustulatus. B. unipustulatus is coloured reddish-brownish on the middle parts of the thorax and it is the only species of the red-coloured ones, showing another colour than black on the underside (and it is the largest by far). The upper side of this species is very iridescent, which is not in the others. Next step is the colouring of the antennae: first article without or very little darker colouring at the top would be B. bullatus. That's not the case here, so next step: if the front border of the black coloured area is in a bow we would have Badister meridionalis (very rare in western Central Europe). Is it straight, it shows Badister lacertosus. And that's what we can see in this specimen. Very rarely it can be in a bow, too, or in B. meridionalis it can be straight, too. Then we get in trouble to identify the beetle and need to compare the habit of both species or need to see the genitalia. Best regards, klaas
