View answered requests for beetle ID
|
On this page you can find photos submitted by users from the start in 2012 till the shutdown in 2023. If possible, the species are identified by the kerbtier.de ID team. Sometimes determination by photo only is impossible, in this case a hint on family and genus and potential species will be given.

Request: Found in Romania last week. In Saula Sarvasar.
Species, family:
Tropinota sp.
Scarabaeidae
Comment: That's kind of Tropinota. Because the beetle is wet I can't tell if it is Tropinota hirta or Tropinota squalida or another species of Tropinota. Regards, Klaas

Request: Found in Romania last week. In Saula Sarvasar.
Species, family:
Cantharis sp.
Cantharidae
Comment: That's a member of genus Cantharis (family Cantharidae). Those beetles often need a dissection, that's why it does not go down to the species. Regards, Klaas

Request: Found in Romania last week, near by Muntii Fagarasului, district Brasov. About 1200 m.a.s.l.
I know that Romania is not an area your best known, but I will be thankful for any suggestions, I don't expect det to the species.
Species, family:
Agrilus sp.
Buprestidae
Comment: Hi Inja, this is a jewel beetle, genus Agrilus. No species determination from my side. Hope, genus helps. Oliver Oliver is right so far. It is genus Agrilus and this genus is almost impossible to identify by photos. I expect it is Agrilus viridis, but that's to insecure by far, so let it be Agrilus sp. Regards, Klaas

Request: Found in Romania last week, near by Muntii Fagarasului, district Brasov. About 1200 m.a.s.l.
Species, family:
Chrysomela sp.
Chrysomelidae
Comment: This is a leaf beetle, should be Chrysomela populi. The genus was formerly known as Melasoma. Cheers, Oliver We better leave this one as Chrysomela sp. I can't see the tip of the Elytra, so this can even be Chrysomela tremulae or C. salicis. And looking its habit I guess, that it is not C. populi. Regards, Klaas

An Stäuchern, Larve unterirdisch an Wurzeln. Häufig. LG, Christoph

LG, Christoph

Request: 2.6.2012, Schaffen-Meldert, Belgium. 3 specimens under loggings in pine woods. Unmistakably Scaphidium quadrimaculatum. But I'm also intrigued by the other little bug running by. The resolution of the pictures is as good as it gets. Scaphisoma sp? I find no description of one with a red spot on the back. Thanks for help!
Johan
Species, family:
Scaphisoma sp.
Staphylinidae
Comment: Hi Johan, in any case two funny pictures! I like the small guy just quickly passing by his larger relative. I can hear him saying: Coming through! It is indeed a representative of genus Scaphisoma, but there is no way to determine the species from the photos. Best regards, Christoph - PS. The big guy is of course confirmed as Scaphidium quadrimaculatum.

Species, family:
Melanotus sp.

Comment: Hmm, sometimes at least an estimate of the size would be helpful. Anyway, looks like Melanotus, probable Melanotus punctatolineatus, but this is note a definite determination. Size should be somewhere around 15 mm, if at least the genus is correct. Regards, Oliver

Comment: Hi Inja, this is most probably the click beetle Prosternon tessellatum. Europe, Asia and North America. From the planar to the subalpine zone. Larva in the trunks of conifers. There is a second Prosternon species present in Romania, P. chrysocomum. It is quite similar, but has an even denser and more shiny pubescence on the elytra and pronotum. Regards, Christoph
