View answered requests for beetle ID

On this page you can find photos submitted by users from the start in 2012 till the shutdown in 2023. If possible, the species are identified by the kerbtier.de ID team. Sometimes determination by photo only is impossible, in this case a hint on family and genus and potential species will be given.

Hi Hannah, this is a representative of genus Hoplia (family Scarabaeidae). In Brandenburg only H. philanthus and H. graminicola are known to occur. You can distinguish them by counting the articles of the antennae: 10 in H. philanthus (very rarely only 9 females) and always 9 in H. graminicola (males and females). Best regards, Christoph

Hi MiguelBk, this specimen from genus Stenopterus with all-red legs can be S. mauritanicus or S. flavicornis. The latter has a black base of the elytra and is anyway not present in Portugal to the best of my knowledge. So it should be Stenopterus mauritanicus. S. ater and S. rufus have (at least partially) black femora. Best regards, Christoph

Hello Hannah Davis, the specimen belongs to the genus Amara (Carabid beetles). Unfortunately, the pictures do not show enough details for a sufficiently reliant determnation. Based on the shape and the dark legs, I tend to Amara ovata, which is quite wide distributed. However, there are some very similar looking species around, which is the reason for at least some uncertainty in the determination. Best regards, Oliver

Hello Lucgast, the soft wing flower beetles show a premating behaviour were the females taste from specific glandular organs (excitators) at the males antennas before starting the act of mating itself. The fluids from the excitators are called glandular gifts. Nice pictures. Best regards, Oliver
