View answered requests for beetle ID

On this page you can find photos submitted by users from the start in 2012 till the shutdown in 2023. If possible, the species are identified by the kerbtier.de ID team. Sometimes determination by photo only is impossible, in this case a hint on family and genus and potential species will be given.

Request:
Found this beetle 22.09.2017. in my house in Beli potok near Belgrade. Beetle was dead and was 22 mm long. I think Blaps lethifera.
Species, family:
Requests for species Blaps sp.  Requests for family Tenebrionidae
Comment:
Hi Dendzo86, not fore sure, because there is a bigger number of Blaps occuring in Europe and I don't know the species of Serbia. So just Blaps sp. I would need to see the beetle itself. Best regards, Klaas

I found this lady beetle 03.10.2017. in my yard in Beli potok near Belgrade. Beetle was long between 2 and 3 mm. For me this is Scymnus maybe rubromaculatus or auritus. Sorry for bad photo, but my camera can not better.
Species, family:
Requests for species Scymnus auritus  Requests for family Coccinellidae
Comment:
Hi Dendzo86, Scymnuis is a quite tricky genus of Family Coccinellidae. For a complete safe Determination we would Need to see the penis, because the more south you go, the more variable they get. This one should be Scymnus aurita in my mind. But..., watch above. ;-) Best regards, Klaas

Under a rock in oak wood, North Wales, about 100 m altitude, 30 November 2017. 3.5-3.6 mm long. Microreticulation on head and pronotum. Wings vestigial. It keys to Bembidion sg Philochthus but doesn't seem to match a species in British key, Luff RES Handbook. The key says all Philochthus are summer species.
Species, family:
Requests for species Bembidion biguttatum  Requests for family Carabidae
Comment:
Hi John, in my mind this is Bembidion (Philochthus) biguttatum. biguttatum is a very common species in GB and on the continent. 7th streak on the Elytra nearly as clear as the sixth. Sides of the Pronotum are bent evenly. Front and base of the Pronotum more or less of the same width. Legs are brownish-yellow, first limb of the antennae brownish yellow, second and following limbs are clearly darker. Philochthus is a summer species, but it is overwintering as beetle. So if there have been warmer days the beetles will show more activity and hide by day under Stones. Maybe the area was flooded by autumn rains, which can force the beetle to leave it's hibernating place and hide somewhere else (in this case under a stone). There is a lot of possibilities for finding it in winter. I often find them in winter, when the river rhine is flooding the area. Than I sieve the floodline and sometimes find many of them. Best regards, Klaas

This Ocypus I found 12.10.2017. under one brick. Location Beli potok near Belgrade. Beetle was exactly long 20 mm. One coleopterologist exclude O.olens because of reddish tips of antennae so this beetle stay unidentified. Are the possible identification to the species level. I know that photos are bad but my camera battery was near the end.
Species, family:
Requests for species Ocypus sp.  Requests for family Staphylinidae
Comment:
Hi Dendzo86, it's certainly not Ocypus olens, that is correct. I'd suggest that it belongs to genus Tasgius (contained in Ocypus on kerbtier.de) but even the genus ID comes with some uncertainty. I'm not familiar with the Ocypus and Tasgius species from Serbia so there is no way I could identify it to species level. Best regards, Moritz
