View answered requests for beetle ID

On this page you can find photos submitted by users from the start in 2012 till the shutdown in 2023. If possible, the species are identified by the kerbtier.de ID team. Sometimes determination by photo only is impossible, in this case a hint on family and genus and potential species will be given.

This Pterostichus was long 11 mm. Found him 07.10.2017. under one stone in Beli potok near Belgrade. Maybe Pterostichus nigrita?
Species, family:
Requests for species Pterostichus nigrita/rhaeticus  Requests for family Carabidae
Comment:
Hi Dendzo86, this is either Pterostichus nigrita or Pterostichus rhaeticus - both species are nearly idential and the differentiation by genital characteristics is also not clear. Maybe P. rhaeticus is a synonym to P. nigrita but for the moment, both taxa ae valid. Best regards, Fabian   In the Moment there is no difference between Pt. rhaeticus and Pt. nigrita seen in their genes. The problem is that in the Moment only the mytochondrial gene is known and a complete genetic research could Show completely different results. No one knows. But you can see very well differences in the male genitalia and you can see clear differences in their way of living. Whereas Pterostichus nigrita is a species of humid forrests and Areas, living close to the waterside, Pterostichus rhaeticus is a species living in the completly wet Areas, like moor or marsh. To find Pterostichus rhaeticus you have to go into wet areas of Swinging ground and similar, as you can find in moor and marsh. So that'sd why no one would try to put those two species into one in the moment. You's was found on more dry Areas, so it surely is Pterostichus nigrita. Best regards, Klaas   ... I have to object: (1) only mitochondrial genes are usable for species differentiation as you need (a) genes present in ALL species (so quite conservated) and (b) genes that mutate with approximately the same rate as species evolve - that is only true for mitochondrial genes (as the mitochondria have to work in all species) - (2) I have talked to people who have seen hundered of genitalia of both "species" - there are differences when you look at typical forms in their typical habitats, but there are a lot of intermediate forms and there are at least 5 swamp locations known where either both species occur or there is a huge variation in genitalia. So many experts suppose that this species is in the process of speciation (maybe not finished at the end of the last ice age) and therefore the current status of this species remains dubious. I myself have only found P. nigrita - in drier habitats as well as in swamps and on the shores of small brooks. Best, Fabian
