Rhynchitidae (tooth-nosed snout beetles)

Attelabidae next family

The tooth-nosed snout beetles (Rhynchitidae) are small beetles, closely related to the weevils. They are found on various plants, e.g. willow, poplar, alder, oak and rosaceous plants (apple, hawthorn, blackthorn). Numerous species exhibit brood care behavior. Some species make leaf rolls for their larvae. Others are nest thieves (kleptoparasites) laying their eggs in leaf rolls of other species. With the exception of New Zealand and Hawaii, worldwide approx. 1100 species have been described, the center of distribution is in the tropical zones. In Germany 25 species are known to occur, some of them can be damaging in fruit-growing.
