Dear users of colkat.de and kerbtier.de,

we are pleased to announce that our platforms will cooperate in the future in the recording of the German beetle fauna.

From now on, records from determination requests submitted to kerbtier.de will also contribute to the catalogue and distribution atlas of the beetle fauna of Germany. Up-to-date maps with the catalogue status by German faunal region from colkat.de are now also accessible on kerbtier.de.

With this collaboration we want to further advance the recording of the German beetle fauna by harnessing the input and full potential of professionals, amateur entomologists, nature lovers and photo enthusiasts alike. We hope that our two platforms will continue to receive encouragement and support from an active and growing user community.

I have just updated the thumbnail viewer on entire kerbtier.de: From now on, Lightbox 2.9.0 is used. It allows dynamic browsing through grouped photos, which is particularly useful in all modules related to our ID forum. I would like to thank our user Jochen, whose feedback actually triggered this update.

During the last five years we have received more than 80,000 requests for beetle ID. With this number of records, statistical analysis of the data now starts to get interesting. Therefore, I have programmed a new statistics module which allows simple statistical analysis as well as visualization of the results. In expert mode, you can form groups of requests based on user-defined selection criteria (like in our request search module). As a examples and source of inspiration, we have added 12 pre-defined analyses illustrating the various capabilities of the module. A big 'Thank you' goes out to my co-admin Moritz, who contributed countless ideas and was tireless in debugging the module during the intense two months of development. I wish all users of kerbtier.de – or at least the data-savvy ones – lots of fun with the new module.

I've just implemented another suggestion for improvement by our user Markus, but this time a more challenging one: The module Search answered requests should be able to provide a better overview in cluster mode. For that purpose, I' added a limit function, available for all cluster items. With that, the number of matches per cluster can be limited and the overview of the clusters is greatly improved. Sounds cryptic to you? Just check it out: This test search shows, how many requests per map sheet Markus has submitted. Uncheck the limit checkbox, and you'll see, how this search looked until now.

Furthermore, I just added a new feature last night: At the proposal of our user Markus, a list of missing species is now available in the family overviews. Just click the tiny puzzle icon in the field with the collected number of species.

Today, kerbtier.de celebrates its 10th birthday. Unbelievable how the time flies! The birthday present, however, will be presented mid of November only, as I'm still frenziedly programming on it. I wish all users of kerbtier.de lots of fun on our pages and I hope that we get a good start into the next 10 years.

Our contact and submission modules have been running on SSL encrypted connections for quite some time. Now I have migrated kerbtier.de to encrypted connection in its entirety. Just a small step in the ongoing efforts to make encrypted connections to World Wide Web servers ubiquitous. Furthermore, I just added a like functionality to news module, similar to a number of other pages on kerbtier.de.

Over the last few days, I have programmed a bit here and there on kerbtier.de. Among other things, the collapsible header of kerbtier.de has become even slimmer. Furthermore, I have improved the clustering in the module Search answered requests. Now, when clustering, you can also sort by number of matches per cluster. I must admit, I suspect that not many of our users make real use of this module, although it's quite powerful. One example: Our frequent users probably know that I sometimes sigh when answering a request. Now it would be interesting to know, which users cause the most sighs. Voila, that' not a problem, just run this test search. I want to encourage all our users to make full use of the search module, also for more serious searches ;).

Stenoria analis
Dear colleagues, dear visitors of kerbtier.de, Johannes Lückmann asked me to publish his request for collaboration in monitoring the expansion of the blister beetle Stenoria analis (Schaum, 1859) (Coleoptera: Meloidae) in Germany and in the neighbouring countries.

Which I gladly do. I encourage all users of kerbtier.de to report any findings and occurrences to Johannes (and ideally to us as well).

Additionally, I have just applied a little facelift to the inline map module. Hopefully, it is now more intuitive to use, especially for new users.

I have just added an additional feature to the map module: At Fabian's suggestion, in dynamic map mode the discovery markers can now be aggregated to the ordnance map sheets of TK 50 and TK 100, thus the granularity of the discoveries can be reduced. Also, discovery markers can be clicked if matching inquiries/records from our inquiry module exist. In this case however, an inquiry is not shown directly (since several inquiries may lay beneath one aggregated discovery marker), instead the inquiry search module is called, where all respective inquiries can be viewed. As a side effect, the inquiry search module has been enabled to handle the ordnance map sheets of TK 50 (e.g. L1116) and TK 100 (e.g. C4726).

I have just implemented a new functionality resulting from a very good proposal of our user Tobias67: In the map module, discovery markers resulting from user inquiries/records in our forum are now clickable in dynamic map mode. Upon clicking, the corresponding inquiry is displayed as a popup.

I have just added a new functionality to the map module: You can now display the names and borders of the administrative districts of Germany. In all popup map modules (which are mainly used to gather map sheet numbers), the functionality is not available to keep them as slim and fast as possible.

Due to a comment I received today from our forum user Chris regarding the seasonal occurrence of our two Lagria species, I spontaneously decided to work a bit on our phenograms. While the phenograms can be called as a popup from all species overviews as usual, the main phenogram module is now capable to display phenograms of up to six species at the same time. Just give it a try with this sample inquiry.

Addendum: This morning I just added a selectable view mode. When displaying several species in one phenogram, you can now choose between conjoined and stacked view. The new stacked view makes the structure of the phenogram clearer, especially when displaying more than two species.

Some of you might have noticed that the GUI of kerbtier.de changed in some details during the last four weeks, e.g. design of the buttons and dropdown boxes. Under the hood kerbtier.de now works with HTML 5 instead of HTML 4.01 (strict). Also, I have started to use jQuery on more pages and this trend will continue. If you find any bugs, please send me a bug report, preferably via our contact form or by email.

Minor expansion of the highlights from the requests for beetle ID: In the category "Unsolved exotics" you'll find ID requests for beetles from outside Europe, which we could not determine at all or only to family or genus level. Maybe some of the experts out there take the challenge to have a look of this gallery. In any case we would be happy to receive expert feedback and solution proposals, preferably via our contact form or by email.
