View answered requests for beetle ID

On this page you can find photos submitted by users from the start in 2012 till the shutdown in 2023. If possible, the species are identified by the kerbtier.de ID team. Sometimes determination by photo only is impossible, in this case a hint on family and genus and potential species will be given.

Country, date (discovery):

2019-06-06
Request: Oedemeridae sp. 6.6.2019
Regards,
Mihajlo
Species, family:
Lytta vesicatoria
Meloidae
Comment: Hi Mihajlo, this is Lytta vesicatoria, the so called Spanish Fly. It's body fluids contain a fair amount of Cantharidin, a toxic and powerful vesicant. It is claimed to have aphrodisiac properties. Unfortunately the effective and deadly dose are very close together. Lucullus, the Roman commander and gourmet (118 - 56 BC) is said to have died from an overdose of Spanish Fly, intended to "refresh" his virility. Best regards, Christoph.Christoph

Lässt sich da was machen? 30.05.19 - 2mm. LG und Dank, Christoph
