View answered requests for beetle ID
|
On this page you can find photos submitted by users from the start in 2012 till the shutdown in 2023. If possible, the species are identified by the kerbtier.de ID team. Sometimes determination by photo only is impossible, in this case a hint on family and genus and potential species will be given.

Request: Larinus turbinatus ?
I found this beetle in Gresse-en-Vercors (1500m), France.
I read something that the difference with L. carlinae is the rostrum.
Rostrum almost straight for L. turbinatus
Rostrum curved for L. carlinae.
So I think this rostrum is almost straight.
Date : 23-07-2019
Length : ?
Best regards
Species, family:
Larinus sp.
Curculionidae
Comment: Hi verstraeten, not quite, although the description is basically correct. But it's more subtle than that: L. turbinatus has a markedly shorter rostrum than the beetle in your photograph and it's also quite thick at the base but narrower towards the end. But your beetle's rostrum is the same thickness throughout and it's also a bit too long for turbinatus. It could well be L. carlinae (which is the same as Larinus planus), but without a dorsal view I can't tell. Another possibility is L. sturnus, and that one has a very broad overall build, whereas planus/carlinea is slimmer. That characteristic feature can only be assessed from above (i.e. with a dorsal view). So unfortunately Larinus sp. is the best I can do here. Best wishes, Corinna

Request: Triplax sp. I think. 16.11.2019
Regards,
Mihajlo
Species, family:
Triplax sp.
Erotylidae
Comment: Hi Mihajlo, I agree with genus Triplax. Unfortunatly they're quite difficult to determine, especially the ones with non-metallic black elytra, so that's about as far as I can go. Best regards, Corinna

LG, Christoph
