View answered requests for beetle ID

On this page you can find photos submitted by users. If possible, the species are identified by the kerbtier.de ID team. Sometimes determination by photo only is impossible, in this case at least a hint on family and genus and potential species will be given. Requests to the kerbtier.de ID team can be submitted on the request page. The answered requests are published here shortly (currently 2 hours on average) after submitting.

23,October,2013,from plants of cucubitacae family, sirsa, haryana , india. sir thank you much for identifying my last specimen. vijay
Species, family:
Henosepilachna elaterii  Coccinellidae
Comment:
Hi Vijay, I think this is a representative of the genus Epilachna, with quite a few species on the Indian subcontinent. All of them are known as (minor) pests in Cucurbitaceae. This specimen I think might be Epilachna ocellata, but as I'm not an expert for the Indian beetle fauna, please consider that this is more a hint than a firm determination. Best regards, Christoph  Hi vijay, Dr. Fürsch determined your specimen as Henosepilachna elaterii. But as he is not that familiar with Indian Coccinellidae and it is a photo-determination, there is some minor insecurity left. Best, Fabian

Oi João, this is a representative of genus Chrysomela. There are not too many of these "all-red" species: C. Chrysomela populi, C. tremulae and C. saliceti. A photo of the apex of the elytra would help to identify C. populi, after that the shape of the pronotum, taken from straight above could do the rest. Regards, Christoph

Comment:

Oi Isaias, sorry that we can't be of much help in this case, but the Portuguese weevil fauna is somewhat out of our area of expertise. The specimen reminds me of our genus Brachyderes or closely related, but I can't provide you with a determination in this case. Regards, Christoph

Oi Isaias, this is the old-house borer, Hylotrupes bajulus. It develops in softwood, especially pine and can cause technical damage in wood constructions (e.g. roofs) in buildings. Originating from Europe, it has now a worldwide distribution, including the Mediterranean, South Africa, Asia, the US and Canada. Regards, Christoph
