Die Staphylinidae (Kurz­flügler) sind mit derzeit welt­weit über 50.000 beschriebenen Arten eine der größten Familien im Tierreich überhaupt. Aus Deutschland sind etwas über 1500 Arten bekannt. Sie zeichnen sich durch einen gestreckten Körperbau und verkürzte Flügeldecken aus. Innerhalb der Familie kommen kleinste (< 1 mm) wie auch große (>30 mm) Arten vor. Aufgrund der hohen Artenzahl findet man auch zahlreiche unterschiedliche Lebensweisen: Es gibt räuberisch lebende, karnivore Arten, andere leben an Faulstoffen (saprophag), an Pilzen oder Pflanzen. Manche Arten sind an Ameisen gebunden, andere leben in Säugernestern. Ihre Bestimmung ist oft nicht einfach, manche Gattungen sind sogar ausgesprochen schwierig.
